Enable and Review OCI Cloud Advisor

Introduction:

  • Oracle Cloud Advisor is a free service within Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) that finds potential inefficient in your tenancy and offers guided solutions to help you address them.
  • Using Cloud Advisor, you can follow along with its guided best practices to optimize your tenancy.
  • Cloud Advisor provides guided recommendations for optimizing performance, cost, security, and availability.
  • For security recommendations, Cloud Advisor redirects customers directly to Cloud Guard for all security issues.
  • The Cloud Advisor service is integrated with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Identity and Access Management (IAM) service, which provides easy authentication with native Oracle Cloud Infrastructure identity functionality.

Importance & Benefit:

  • Save money: Cost management identifies underutilized resources and makes recommendations so that you can save money without degrading performance.
  • Improve performance: Performance recommendations identify overutilized resources, recommend changes, and identify block volumes and boot volumes that are not using the performance auto-tuning feature.
  • Strengthen system availability: High availability recommendations provide best practices to manage hardware failure and ensure the resilience and business continuity of your environment.
  • Improve security: The built-in Cloud Guard recommendations help you see and address security vulnerabilities.

In this blog, I'll demonstrate the following:
  • Enable OCI Cloud Advisor
  • Review OCI Cloud Advisor recommendations

Prerequisites:
  • A free tier or paid Oracle Cloud account
  • Enable OCI Cloud Guard in the tenancy

Task #1: Enable Cloud Advisor

1. Open the navigation menu and click Governance & Administration. Under Cloud Advisor, click Overview.

2. On Overview page, click Activate. The Activate Cloud Advisor dialog box opens. In the Activate Cloud Advisor dialog box, select Enable.

- On Settings page, it shows Cloud Advisor status. You can Disable/Enable Cloud Advisor from Settings page as well.

Task #2: Review Cloud Advisor Dashboard

  • Once a day, Oracle Cloud Advisor analyzes all the resources in your tenancy. It identifies cost optimization opportunities, performance bottlenecks, and availability issues in each tenancy.
  • It provides a high-level dashboard summary of the recommendations it made and suggests actions that you can take to optimize your cloud resources.

Task #3: Review Cloud Advisor Recommendations

The Recommendations page shows a table that lists the recommendations for the three categories (cost, performance, and availability).

- Cost management recommendations help you reduce costs by finding and adjusting resources that are underutilized. For example, cost management recommendations help you find underutilized compute instances, over-provisioned Autonomous Data Warehouse instances, unattached block volumes or boot volumes, and Object Storage buckets without lifecycle policy rules.

- To review a recommendation details, select one of the recommendations.

- Performance recommendations help you improve performance by finding and adjusting resources that are overutilized. For example, increase the availability of applications running on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure by using redundant compute nodes in different availability domains to support failover capability and properly leverage fault domains.

- High availability recommendations help you improve system resilience. For example, increase the availability of applications running on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure by using redundant compute nodes in different availability domains to support failover capability and properly leverage fault domains.

- For security recommendations click view Cloud Guard. Use the service to examine your Oracle Cloud Infrastructure resources for security weakness and to examine your operators and users for risky behavior. Upon detection, Cloud Guard can suggest, assist, or take corrective actions, based on your configuration.
